John Lindberg Bennington, age 90, passed away Friday, August 11, 2017 at Signature Health Care in Warren, from complications from surgery two years prior. John, also known as “Lindy” to family and friends, was born May 21, 1927 to John C. and Alice Preston Bennington in Canonsburg, Pa.
John was a highly decorated member of the U.S. Air Force, serving from 1945 to 1969. He was very proud of his military background. He was a very loving, fun and compassionate person with a strong work ethic. He loved to bird-watch, and one of his favorite places to bird-watch was Presque Isle State Park in Erie, PA. Although small in stature, John was big at heart. He loved family gatherings.
John is survived by June Grafton Weimer, whom he married August 17, 2011; his son, Gary Bennington; grandchildren Joshua P. Bennington and Rachael L. Bennington; great-grandson Carter P. Langley; close cousins Karen Sanfrey Wright, who spent many hours visiting John, Valerie Sanfrey, whose stuffed cabbage John especially enjoyed, Michael Lips, from Mt. Airy, Md., Debra Horvath, and many nieces, nephews, and other cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Augustine Hennlich Bennington; sister, Dorothy Santos; brother, Eugene Bennington; and his aunt Esther Sanfrey, who was very special to him.
Per his request, cremation is taking place. Services are private. His remains will be laid to rest at Arlington National Cemetery.
