Velma Jean Thompson departed this earth on March 25, 2022 after an extended illness at her home in the loving care of her daughter. Velma J. Thompson was born on January 2nd, 1952, in Warren, Ohio to the late Mr. Joseph Walker, Jr., and Mrs. Alma Walker of Warren, Ohio.
At the age of 14, Velma accepted the lord Jesus Christ as her savior, and was baptized at Friendship Baptist Church. Velma remained a steadfast, loyal, and committed member of her church community and to the Christian faith. At Friendship Baptist Church, Velma served as a senior usher and participated in the women’s ministry and general mission. Velma graduated from Howland High School in 1970 and remained active in the alumni group, attending many events throughout her life. Velma retired from Packard Electric, a division of General Motors, in 2007 after 34 years of service and worked in the Warren city schools in her retirement.
Velma married Paul Thompson on March 18, 1984. From this union, Velma’s only child, a daughter, Brittany, was born in 1985. Velma enjoyed shopping, traveling, and collecting crystal. Velma was a mentor in Big Brothers Big Sisters of Warren, Ohio where she formed a lasting bond with her “little sister” Brandy Listinger-Allen. In Warren, among her friends and family, Velma was known as a sharp dresser with a quick wit, and a kind and generous heart. Velma was an avid reader and could devour novels by E. Lynn Harris and Toni Morrison in one sitting.
Velma Thompson leaves behind her beloved daughter, Brittany (Aaron) Pride, grandson, Maxwell Pride, siblings Erma Golidy, Deborah Smith, Derick F. Walker, all of Warren, Ohio, Denise Walker of Seattle, Washington, Edith Walker of Henderson, NV and Bernadine Walker of Monmouth Junction, NJ, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins to cherish her memory. Ms. Thompson was preceded in death by her parents Mr. Joseph W. Walker Jr, and Mrs. Alma Walker.
A Funeral Service will be held at Friendship Baptist Church in Warren on Saturday, April 2,2022 at 11AM. Friends may call one hour prior the time of the service. Interment will at Pineview Memorial Warren, OH.
