Shirley James

Mrs. Shirley Ann (Whetzel) James, 86, of Cortland, OH, went to her heavenly home, surrounded by her sons, on June 5, 2021 at Ohio Living Lake Vista, Cortland, OH.  

Shirley was born in Morgantown, WV to David & Leila Whetzel on January 12, 1935. She graduated from Morgantown Senior High School in 1953.  She married Virgil James on March 31, 1956 in Winchester, VA. She worked as a warehouse manager for Stambaugh Thompson in Warren, OH prior to retiring. She was an active member of the Bazetta Christian Church for over 50 years, participating in many church activities including; Women’s Book Club, Blanket and Shawl Ministry and the Child Conservation League. She was involved in the PTA and the Lakeview Boosters club in the 1970’s, contributing countless hours.  In retirement she volunteered at Hillside Rehabilitation Hospital, Warren, OH. Shirley loved being a wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She touched so many lives with her love and was known as a great cook who fed anyone who came into her home.   

Shirley is survived by her four sons Steve (Linda), Scott (Vani), Dennis (Nancy) and John David (Diana). She is survived by her 11 grandchildren, Rajah, Steven, Krishna, Jeff, Nick, Jeremiah, Scott, Jonathon, Ashley, Justin and Jaci. She is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren and by her two sisters, Loraine Reese and Loretta Faulkner.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Virgil, parents, her grandson David James, and four brothers and two sisters.

Family and friends may visit and pay tribute to Shirley on Thursday, June 10, 2021, from 10 – noon with funeral services following at Bazetta Christian Church. Burial will be immediately following at Sager Memorial Cemetery, Bristolville, OH

In lieu of flowers the family requests that Shirley’s memory be honored by making a donation to the Warren Family mission  or the  Bazetta Christian Church.
