Rev. Dr. John F. Newby, Jr., Ph.D.

WARREN - Rev. Dr. John F. Newby Jr., Ph.D. age 76, entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, November 11, 2020 at The Greens Care and Rehabilitation  Center in Lyndhurst, Ohio.

He was born February 4, 1944 in Louisville, Kentucky, son of John F. Newby Sr. and Emma Mae Bennett Newby.

Rev. Dr. Newby was a 1962 graduate of Louisville Male High School. Received his B.S. degree from Tennessee State University, his Masters degree from Howard University, and his Ph.D from University of Massachusetts, also a Ph.D. from Winebrenner Theological Seminary.

Rev. Dr. Newby held various positions of employment during his lifetime. Employment Counselor and Manpower Development Specialist in Washington, D.C. Director of Evaluation with National Alternative Schools Program in Amherst, Massachusetts. Assistant Professor at Florida State University, Tallahassee, FL; Associate Professor; Bowling Green State University, Bowling Green, OH.

Rev Dr. Newby became an ordained Itinerant Elder in the AME Church in 1987, where he served as pastor of eight churches: Bethel AME; Van Wert, OH, Mason Chapel AME, Findlay, OH: Payne Memorial AME, Holland, OH; Greater St. Matthew AME, Lorain, OH; Grace AME, Warren, OH; Bethel Lockland, OH,  St. Paul AME, Lima, OH and St Paul AME, McKeesport, PA.  He was currently a member of Lee Memorial AME in Cleveland, where Rev. Michael Sims is the pastor.

Rev. Dr. Newby leaves to cherish his memories his wife Geraldine Flenoury Newby whom he married October 17, 2014. Two sons, Kevin (Patricia) Newby; Toledo, OH, Shaun (Jan) Newby; North Ridgeville, OH, a brother, Earl (Elizabeth)  Newby of Louisville, KY. 5 grandchildren, a host of relatives and friends

Preceding him in death were his parents.

Services are 3:00 pm Tuesday, November 17, 2020 at Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, with Rev. Gina Thornton officiating.  Friends may call 2:00 to 3:00 pm Tuesday at the funeral home.  The family will also receive friends at 3317 Tod Ave. N.W., Warren, Ohio 44485.
