HOWLAND – Norma Lee Hernon, age 93, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family Tuesday, October 24, 2023. A lifelong area resident, she was born March 31, 1930 in Warren, the daughter of Edward and Regina (Paulus) McGowan.
A 1948 graduate of St. Mary’s High School, Norma also attended Youngstown College. She worked at Republic Steel in the blast furnace and the lab. With six sons on the swim team, she was a long-time member and past president of the Warren Western Reserve Swim Boosters. She also belonged to the Irish Heritage Society, Mensa, and Christ Our King Parish, where she had served as Cantor for twenty-five years and as president of the Altar & Rosary Society. In 1975, she and Roger were honored to open their home to seventeen Vietnamese refugees.
Precious memories of Norma live on with seven sons: Gary (Angel) of Florida, Kevin (Karen) of Florida, Scott of Florida, Timothy (Kathy) of New Hampshire, Brendan (Lori) of Warren, Hugh of Columbus, and Donogh (Jozefa) of Columbus; eighteen grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Jerry and Raymond McGowan, both of Jacksonville, Fla.
Preceding her in death are her parents; her beloved husband, former Warren City Fire Chief, Roger Hernon; and two sons, Patrick and Brian Hernon.
Calling hours are 10:00 am to 11:00 am Saturday, October 28, 2023 at St. Mary and St. Joseph Parish, 232 Seneca Ave. N.E., Warren, where the Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11:00 am. Interment will be held privately at Meadowbrook Cemetery in Champion.
