Michael Stefanick Obituary

Michael Paul Stefanick, 89, of Cortland, passed away Thursday, July 29, 2021, at 5:20 p.m. in his home surrounded by his family under the comforting care of hospice.

He was born Sunday, July 24, 1932, in Emporium, Pennsylvania the son of the late Peter and Mary Boyer Stefanick and was a lifelong area resident.

Mike enlisted into the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War.  He continued his service in the United States Army Reserves with the 112th Engineer Combat Battalion in Youngstown.  For his service to his country, he was awarded the Soldiers Medal; Presidential Citation, Korean War Medal, Good Conduct Medal, Combat Badge, Ohio National Guard Medal of the Year 1954; Sgt Major Award; Pacific Theater of Operation and the European Theater of Operation and was honorably discharged on November 30, 1994.

Mike retired from A.P. O’Horo Local 66 Operating Engineer Company having run overhead crane where he left his expertise on many highways and bridges in and around Trumbull and Mahoning County for over 30 years.  He also retired from the United States Army National Guard after serving for over 25 years and was with the Mahoning County Deputy Sheriff’s Office for several years.

For the last 16 years, Mike was a member of the American Legion Post 540 of Cortland and the Trumbull County Honor Guard Team have the honor of serving over 5000 hours of honor to those who passed away. He was also a member of the Local 66 Operating Engineers Union.

He enjoyed feeding the birds, squirrels and deer that ventured into his yard, and enjoyed gardening.  He had a great joy for listening to and dancing to Polka and Slovenian music, watching boxing, ultimate fighting; collecting miniature construction equipment, with which he went to various organizations and schools with his displays sharing and explaining with children all the equipment it takes to build our bridges and highways.

Mike was a member of Christ Episcopal Church as well as the Brotherhood of the church.

He is survived by his wife of 22 years, the former Mary Anne Miller Keith, whom he married on October 25, 1998; his children Carol (Brian) Wingrove of Streetsboro, Michelle (Pete) Colettis of North Lima, Kathy (Michael) Sheridan of Boardman, Jackie (Ron) Casalini of New Middletown, Michael (Lisa) Stefanick of Canfield and Marlene (Dr. Robert) Woodruff of Lake Milton; his grandchildren George, Michael, Nicole, Michael Jr., Robert and Rachel; his step-children Laurie (Steve) Yarborough and Glenn (Patty) Keith; his step-grandchildren Hayley, Angela, Nathan, Paul, Wes, Ellie, Matt, Stephen, Jake and Luke; and by numerous nieces and nephews.

Besides his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his first wife Ann Stefanick; four sisters Ann Vogrin, Delores Adam, Dolly Sheehn, and Pauline Bacha; and his brother John Stefanick.

A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, September 18, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. in Christ Episcopal Church with calling hours to take place one hour prior.

The American Legion Post 540 Honor Guard will render honors following the services in the church.
