Mary "Kay" Schaffer Obituary

Mary Kathryn “Kay” Schaffer, 88, of Howland and formerly of Ravenna, entered peacefully into eternal life on Friday, August 20, 2021, at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Home in Howland following a period of declining health under the comforting care of hospice.

Kay was born Monday, October 24, 1932, in Hastings, Pennsylvania the daughter of the late James E. and Kathryn Lear Fairbanks.

She was a 1950 graduate of Howland High School.  Kay was the matriarch of her family.  She was known for her fashionable dressing and her “grandma hair due”.  Kay never missed an episode of Days of Our Lives.  She enjoyed bird watching and loved her dog “Shadow”, enjoyed traveling with her late husband, Jim, and she was Willie Nelson’s biggest fan.

When living in Ravenna, Kay was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Ravenna.  She was also an active member of SS. Cyril & Methodius 50 + Club and the 300 Club of SS. Cyril & Methodius Catholic Church.

Kay is survived by her children Deborah Ryan of Mineral Ridge, Dr. Rodney (Patti) Randall of Odessa, Fl, and Steve (Lori) Randall of Tampa, Fl.; two brothers William J. (Sally) Fairbanks of Houston, TX; David L. (Jolene) Fairbanks of Liberty; two sisters Eleanor Fairbanks of Warren and Norma (Ron) Rappach of Howland; fifteen grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews and extended family.

Besides her parents, Kay was preceded in death by her 1st husband Donald Duane Randall on October 9, 1971, her 2nd husband Glenn Swindler Sr. and her 3rd husband James F. “Jim” Schaffer of 26 years on April 15, 2015; her daughter Donna Kay Turner on October 14, 2020; her siblings Dr. Robert Fairbanks, Atty. Edward Fairbanks, R. Glenn Fairbanks, Charles R. Fairbanks, and by an infant sister Mary Fairbanks. 

Family will receive friends on Sunday, August 29, 2021, from 2 to 3 PM with a funeral service to follow at 3PM in the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home.

A cremation will follow with burial to follow in Jamestown, Pennsylvania.
