Joan "Joanie" L. Shimko

HOWLAND – Joan “Joanie” L. Shimko, age 92, lifelong area resident, went home to Jesus Saturday, March 27, 2021 at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren.  She was born March 4, 1929 in Cleveland, the daughter of Lester and Myra (Fenkell) Stevens.

A 1948 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School, Joan worked as the head cook at Champion High School for many years.  She was an active member of Champion Christian Church, where she sang in the choir, worked the rummage sales, and was active in the Ladies Aid, as well as helping in the kitchen with many a meal.  She also enjoyed bowling, quilting, and traveling.  Her family will never forget her great potato salad.

Precious memories of Joan live on with her four children: Jean Coxson (Tim) of Bradenton, Fla., Phil Shimko (Rebecca) of Vienna, Kimmer Wolfinger (Ed) of North Bloomfield, and Dave Shimko (Okim Susan Choi) of Hong Kong, China; five grandchildren: Rita Graham (Matt), Sherri Duell (Todd), Melanie Coxson, Rachael Cain (Nathan), and Alysha Shimko (Corey Rook, fiancé); five great-grandchildren: Sydney Graham, Reagan Graham, Sophie Duell, Ryleigh Cain, and Avary Cain; her special cousin, Gayle Lauth and her puppy, Bambi; and her longtime and dear companion, Harry Brown of Warren.

Her parents, Lester and Myra Stevens, and her brother Ed Stevens, precede her in death.

Services are 10:00 am Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, with Rev. Ken Hopkins officiating. Entombment will follow at Crown Hill Burial Park. Masks are required, and social distancing practices will be observed.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests material contributions be made to the memorial fund of Champion Christian Church, 151 Center Street West, Warren, Ohio 44481.
