Irene (Koufos) Vardavas

Irene Vardavas, 89, of Howland Township, entered peacefully into eternal life on Monday, July 20, 2020 at 5:00 a.m. at Windsor House of Champion following a lengthy illness.

Irene was born on Sunday, August 3, 1930 in Rhodes, Greece the daughter of the late Elias and Hariklea Stouppos Koufos. 

Irene attended Italian school and was able to speak Greek, Italian and English.  She immigrated to the United States in 1956 living first for one year in Detroit, Michigan and then moved to Warren in 1957.

She was a homemaker and previously worked in the cafeteria at Trumbull Memorial Hospital and worked for AVI Food Systems.

Irene was a member of St. Demetrios Hellenic Greek Orthodox Church and a member of the Pan Rhodian Society.

She was married on September 24, 1949 to Nicholaos “Nick” Vardavas and they were married for 51 years until his passing on December 11, 2000.  Together they shared the love of three children; a daughter Harriet “Kitsa” (Michael) Aivazis of Howland and two sons Dino Vardavas and Ely “Louie” Vardavas also both of Howland; five grandchildren John (Angie) Aivazis, Erin (Dr. Nicholas) Papakonstantinou. Erin (John) Catalano, Alexis and Kristen Vardavas; and eight great grandchildren Vasilia and Elitsa Aivazis, Stamati, Mihali, Niko and Kristiana Papakonstantinou, and Stella and Samuel Dean Catalano.  Irene is also survived by two sisters Paraskevi Zanetakis of Warren and Maria (Stamatis) Homatopoulos of Greece.

Besides her parents and husband, Nick, Irene was preceded in death by a brother George Koufos.

Family will receive friends on Friday, July 24, 2020 from 10:30 a.m. until the hour of service in the church.

A Funeral Service, with Fr. Constantine Valantasis officiating, will take place on Friday, July 24, 2020 at 11:30 a.m. in St. Demeterios Hellenic Greek Orthodox Church, 429 High St. NE, Warren, Ohio 44483.  Social distancing protocols will be upheld and expected, and facial coverings are highly recommended.

Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery in Warren.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made in Irene’s name to the Pan Rhodian Society and may be given at the church or mailed to 10 Spring Hollow Creek NE, Warren, Ohio 44484.
