Dr. Frank Paul Vargo, MD

Frank Paul Vargo MD, 92, passed away peacefully at his home in Warren, Ohio, on May 16, 2021, surrounded by love and prayer. 

Frank was born in Cleveland, Ohio on December 24, 1928 to late Frank P. Sr. and Julia Jahor Vargo, of Nyiregyhaza and Miskolc, Hungary, respectively. 

He went to Saint Elizabeth of Hungary Elementary School on Buckeye Road. It was there he learned English, as Hungarian was spoken in their home.  He attended Benedictine High School, where the concepts of Ora et Labora, “Pray and Work,” became two pillars he held dear in his daily life.  After graduating from Benedictine High School, he began his studies at Case Western Reserve University, completing his degree at Kent State University. He then attended The Ohio State University in Columbus, Ohio, to study medicine, graduating in 1955. After graduation, he completed an internship with the Youngstown Hospital Association in 1956. 

He continued his medical training with the United States Air Force at Lackland Air Force Base, in San Antonio, Texas from 1956-1958.  After completing his duty with the Air Force, he established his practice on the west side of Warren, where he provided care as a physician until 2015. Dr. Vargo helped initiate the Coronary Care Unit at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Warren.  He was a past president of the Trumbull County Medical Society and a consulting physician in the formation of United Healthcare.  Dr. Vargo devoted his life to medicine for 66 years; it was his vocation and he continued to study medical journals even after his retirement. He remained a member of The American Medical Association. He genuinely loved and cared for his patients.

In his spare time, he loved reading, building model airplanes, and classical music. He enjoyed playing chess every day at lunch. He was a member of the Sky Hawk Club, as well as The Air Force Association. He loved spending time and eating with his family. The letters and “drawings” he sent to his children and grandchildren will be cherished forever.

Dr. Vargo was a member of Saint John Paul II Parish, on the west side of Warren.  

Dr. Vargo is survived by his wife of 38 years, Anne, soulmate & love of his life. 

Dr. Vargo is also survived by 7 of his children. Dr. Susan Vargo (Dennis) of Bath, Ohio; Kay Bloom (Brad) of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; Dr. Paul Vargo (Amy) of St. Paul, Minnesota; Frank Vargo of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio; Patrick Vargo (Eileen) of Middleburg Heights, Ohio; Dr. Edie Vargo (Scott) of Columbia, Maryland; and Sarah Vargo of Akron, Ohio.  He is also survived by his 13 grandchildren, whom he loved and who love him deeply.  

He is preceded in death by Julia and Frank Vargo; his sisters Mary Elizabeth Repasi and Irene Mathews.  Also awaiting him in Heaven is his daughter, Mary Agnes Vargo.

Calling hours will be held from 4-7 pm on Friday, May 21, 2021 at Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, 962 North Road NE, Warren, Ohio 44483. 

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at Saint John Paul II, 420 North Street, Warren, Ohio 44483, on Saturday, May 22, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. with Fr. Frantisek Katrinak as celebrant, preceded by closing prayers to be recited at 9:20 a.m. Saturday in the funeral home prior in leaving for the church.

Burial will follow at All Souls Cemetery in Bazetta, Ohio with full military honors.
