Dolores Capan Obituary

Dolores “Dee” Capan, 91, of Howland Township, entered peacefully into eternal life on Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at 5:50 p.m. at Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Home in Howland under the comforting care of Hospice.

She had a very generous and giving nature.  Dee entered the Gates of Heaven and into the waiting arms of her beloved husband John R. Capan with the hopes that he had a set of golf clubs with him.  They married March 30, 1967, and shared 32 loving and fun years together until his death on August 9, 1999.

Dee was born July 6, 1930, in Warren, Ohio, the daughter of the late Stephen P. and Helen S. Sipos Recser and was a lifelong area resident.

Dee was a 1948 graduate of Warren G. Harding High School.

In the early 1950’s, she worked at Kozy Korner Candy’s where you could find her making candy and fudge.  It was there that she met her very loving and special long-time friend, Eleanor Fairbanks who survived her in Warren.

She was employed for 32 years as head office coordinator in the Data Processing Department at VanHuffel Tube of Warren and that is where she met the love of her life John.

In 1950, Dee and her father decided to take up golf.  She said, back then no one took lesson, you just went out and played.  And played she did; recording seven career “aces”; Something usually afforded only to golf pros.  Her first hole-in-one came in 1960 at the former Eastwood Golf Course.  Her seventh ace came some 28 years later in 1998 at a course in Florida.  Dee called them all “Lucky Shots”.  She participated in several golf leagues and golfed well into her 80’s.  She was also an avid bowler in many leagues and participated in many other sports.

Dee loved living in the Villas at Shepherd of the Valley.  She always looked forward to and enjoyed the weekly bus trips to the stores and lunch outings and all the activities at “The Big House”.  She made friends easily and often encourages other residences to join-in.  On any given warm and sunny day, you would find her on her front porch greeting her wonderful neighbors and handing out treats to the neighborhood dogs.

Dee excelled in sewing having made her wedding dress, jackets and many fancy sweatshirts.  She and John Shared many great memories traveling, playing golf, and hitting a few casinos.  They enjoyed hosting many home parties and card games.

Dee was a member of the SS. Cyril & Methodius 50 + Club, 300 Club of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish and participated in other raffles, ticket, and food sales at the church.

She loved to play pinochle but have very limited eye-sight.  Twice a week she played cards and with the help and patience of her good friends, she was able to enjoy the game.

Dee is survived by her stepdaughter Donna Capan (Roger) Zavodny of Nevada; two step-grandchildren Morgan (Daniel) Zavodny Chapman and Austin Zavodny both of Columbus, Ohio; her three nieces, Cyndi (Danny) Dunnam, and Denise Rice both of Georgia and Tracy Golden of Florida.  Also morning her loss are several nieces and nephews from her husbands family and many, many wonderful friends who cared deeply about her.

Dolores was preceded in death by her parents, husband John, her sister Edna DeLucia and a nephew Glenn Starnes.
