Derek James Aikins, 43, of Niles, passed away peacefully with his family by his side in the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 10, 2021 in Mercy Health St. Joseph Warren Hospital following a 20 year bout with kidney disease.
He was born January 28, 1978 in Youngstown, the son of James E. and Karen K. Elder Aikins and was a lifelong area resident.
A 1996 graduate of Niles McKinley High School, Derek received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Youngstown State University.
Derek was manager of Game Stop in the Eastwood Mall.
He enjoyed hunting at the family camp, watching movies, and playing video games.
Fond memories of Derek will forever be remembered by his parents of Niles; son Tyler A. Aikins of Niles; step daughter Kayla L. (Shawn) Duley of Niles; two sisters Nicole (Brian) Kokai of North Ridgeville and Tasha (James) Stanton of Findlay; nephews and nieces Nathan Stanton, Lucas, Gabriel, and Owen Kokai, Kalie Gardner, and Mackenzie (Brian) Clark; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, November 13, 2021 from Noon until 1:50 p.m. in the funeral home.
A Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, November 13, 2021 at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home with Pastor James N. Dittmar III, as celebrant.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions take the form of donations in Derek’s name to Kidney Foundation of Ohio, Inc., 2831 Prospect Ave E, Cleveland, Ohio 44115.
