William H. Maffitt, 93, of Warren, died Sunday, August 26, 2018 at Washington Square Nursing Center. He was born May 9, 1925 in Warren, the son of Wayne and Violet (Biddle) Maffitt.
Bill attended Bazetta High School and served in the U.S. Army as a supply sergeant in Okinawa at the end of World War II. He also served seven years in active reserve. Later, he was employed at Republic Steel and LTV in supervision.
For many years, he enjoyed spending time in St. Petersburg, Fla. with his wife, Janet.
His interests were working with his brother, Bob, at Maffitt’s Meadows, golfing, a huge collection of baseball caps, coin collecting, gardening, and the Supervisor’s Club. He was a lifetime member of VFW Post 1090 and an honorary member of the Slovak Club and the DS Club.
He leaves behind his wife, Janet Palm Harmon Maffitt, whom he married January 7, 2007; his son, William G. (Sherry) Maffitt of Warren; a stepson, Frederick (Phyllis) Harmon of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Nancy R. (Mike) Spear and Rebecca L. Cech, both of Warren; a grandson, Ryan Maffitt; several step-grandchildren; a brother, Jack (Sandie) Maffitt; and a sister-in-law, Alma Palm Smith.
Preceding him in death are his parents; his first wife, Dorothy; a sister, Lois, and a brother, Bob.
Services are 3:00 pm Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Staton-Borowski Funeral Home, with Chaplain Ralph Barney officiating. Friends may call 2:00 to 3:00 pm Wednesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, material contributions may be made either to Washington Square Nursing Center, 202 Washington St. N.W., Warren, Ohio 44483, or Southern Care Hospice, 5401 Ashley Circle, Youngstown, Ohio 44515.
