James Edward Ritter, 59, of Austintown, passed away peacefully at 8:52 p.m. Monday, January 21, 2019 in the Intensive Care Unit at St. Joseph Health Center in Warren following a short illness.
James was born on July 12, 1959 in Youngstown as the seventh child of ten and the third son of Thomas P. and Margaret E. Papp Ritter and was a lifelong area resident.
He attended St. Edward Elementary School and was on the football team at Rayen High School where he graduated in 1977.
A veteran of the United States Army he served his country abroad in Germany with the 170th Military Police Company Ft. Lewis Washington as a sharp shooter and chef. He served his country faithfully and honorably and for his service to his country he was awarded the Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Army Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster; National Combat Occupational Professional Development Ribbon, Army Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster and Sharpshooter Qualification Badge and was awarded an honorable discharge on December 28, 1989 with the rank of Staff Sergeant.
He enjoyed gardening and planting buckeye trees, following along with Jeopardy and ofter referred to it as a “piece of cake”, as was trivial pursuit and checkers. Most important to Jim was spending time with family and friends and meeting new people.
James is survived by two children James (Kristina) Ritter and grandchildren Lanea and London of San Diego; daughter Jessica Ritter and granddaughter Ava of Fresno, CA; his mother Margaret E. Ritter of Kinsman; brother Thomas H. Ritter of Alexandria, VA; sister Margaret Cleckner of Akron; former brother-in-law Jerry (Kathy) Cleckner of Youngstow; sister Charmaine (Joe) Jabr of Morgan Hill, CA; sister Cathleen DeMarco of Kinsman; brother Mark C. Ritter of Kinsman; sister Mary (Steve) Shambaugh of Newark, CA; sister Judith Reynolds of Youngstown; many aunts, uncles and nieces and nephews.
Jim was preceded in death by his father, Thomas, brother Daniel S. Ritter, sister Suzanne M. Ritter; brothers-in-laws Joseph E. DeMarco and James Reynolds.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, February 9, 2019 from 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the Staton-Borowski Funeral Home.
An Order of Christian Burial Service will be offered at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in the funeral home.
