Donald Wayne Poe, 86, of Camden, S.C., passed away peacefully Tuesday, July 4, 2017 at Shepherd of the Valley in Howland, Ohio. He was born June 18, 1931 in Royal Oak, Michigan, the son of Lorin Wilson and Alta Edith (Case) Poe.
Don served sixteen years in the U.S. Air Force, initially as a navigator but soon transitioned to fighter pilot, spanning the time between the Korean War and the Cold War. He and his family moved to Camden in 1967 after his military service, with Don working in insurance sales until his hiring at DuPont, where he spent twenty years in nylon manufacturing and supervision. He had been active in the Malvern Hill Baptist Church and Wateree Baptist Church. He was a 33rd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and Past Master of Kershaw Lodge #29.
Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Lea (William) Cunningham of Cortland, Ohio; two sons, John C. (Elaine) of Camden and Stephen L. (Jennifer) of Brevard, North Carolina, eleven grandchildren: Alexis and twins Ian and Christian Cunningham, Lauren, Katherine, and Savannah Poe, Wyatt and Elise McClellan, Kathryn and Meredith Hart, and David Poe, and one great granddaughter, Danielle Blackmon.
Don’s life will be celebrated with a service at 7:00 pm Monday, July 24 at Wateree Baptist Church. Final services of committal, Masonic rites, and full military honors will be conferred at 2:00 pm Tuesday, July 25 at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
